About Us
Supporting Walker County Children

Backyard Blessings is a food assistance program dedicated to supporting children in Walker County, Alabama.
Founded in January 2010 in Sumiton, our mission is to ensure that no child goes hungry over the weekend. We provide nonperishable food items to elementary and middle school students through our weekend backpack program. By addressing food insecurity, we aim to improve the health, well-being, and educational outcomes of our children.
Our program has grown significantly since its inception, now serving almost 1400 students weekly. We work closely with public schools to identify children in need and distribute bags of non-perishable food items every Thursday & Friday. Our efforts are made possible through the generous support of volunteers, donors, and community partners.
Our mission is to help needy children in area schools by providing food for the weekend through a Friday backpack food program. By eliminating hunger we hope to improve the health, well being, and education of our children.
How Our Program Works
Ensuring Weekend Nutrition Throughout Walker County, AL.
Identify Students
We partner with public schools in Walker County to identify children who are at risk of food insecurity. School administrators and teachers play a crucial role in helping us pinpoint those who would benefit the most from our program.
Pack Food Items
Our dedicated volunteers gather to pack nonperishable food items into food bags. The food items are selected to be nutritious, easy to prepare, and child-friendly, ensuring that the children can easily consume them without adult assistance.
Distribute Backpack Meals
Every Thursday & Friday, the packed meals are distributed to the identified students across Walker County Schools to serve hundreds of homes. This ensures that they have enough food to last through the weekend.
Weekend Meals
The students take their non-perishable meals home, providing them with food and snacks until they return to school on Monday. This consistent support helps alleviate the stress of food insecurity for both the children and their families.
Our impact
Making a Difference
Backyard Blessings operates a straightforward yet impactful program designed to ensure that children have access to food over the weekend.
Why It Matters
The Importance of Nutrition
Childhood hunger is a critical issue that affects many aspects of a child’s life. At Backyard Blessings, we believe that addressing food insecurity is essential for several reasons:
- Health: Proper nutrition is crucial for a child’s physical development and health. By providing regular meals, we help prevent malnutrition and related health problems, ensuring that children grow up healthy and strong.
- Education: Hunger can significantly impact a child’s ability to concentrate, learn, and perform well in school. Our program ensures that children are well-fed and ready to learn, which can improve their academic performance and future opportunities.
- Well-being: Knowing they have food for the weekend reduces stress and anxiety for children and their families. This stability contributes to better emotional and mental well-being, allowing children to focus on their education and personal development.
By eliminating hunger, we aim to create a supportive environment where children can thrive academically, physically, and emotionally. Our efforts not only benefit the children directly but also strengthen the community as a whole.
